Manchester Airport City investment / 11,400 Jobs for locals promised

Plans for a £650m project to transform the area around Manchester Airport have been submitted – and bosses have revealed they will train local people to take up some of the 11,400 jobs.

Chiefs hope to attract global businesses to the Airport City development, which will also house offices, hotels, retail outlets and leisure facilities.

They believe it will let Manchester compete with the likes of Barcelona, Amsterdam and Munich and want the surrounding communities to share in the boom – including the neighbouring Wythenshawe estate.

Employment, education and training programmes will run to maximise the use of local labour and the curriculum at Manchester Enterprise Academy in Wythenshawe will be tailored to equip students with the skills to find work at the hub.

The centrepiece of the proposed development will be a new 13-acre central park, surrounded by a ‘downtown’ district of contemporary buildings and public areas.
