The minute Whorf starts talking about the Hopi language I am captivated. Or should I say, Whorf talks about the Hopi language and I am captivated? In order to remove all references of “time” from the English language might render it useless, without creating some new words altogether. Whorf’s argumentation is fantastic: “The metaphysics underlying our own language, thinking, and modern culture…imposes upon the universe two grand COSMIC FORMS, space and time.” The metaphysical dialogue and the author’s syntax style is complex and confusing, at times; but if you know what he means, his style is quite exciting.
     This might be partially due to a language barrier that Whorf brings up in his essay. The presence of the word mystical to define aspects of a language can be useful at times, although much to the contrary the very definition of the word is reeking with misunderstanding. Whorf chooses…
