As part of a day of action against destitution across the UK, there will be an event hosted by local refugee and asylum support organisation and charities in the Manchester Cathedral Gardens on Saturday 29th June 2013 between 11:00 and 2:30 pm. The day will include a peaceful procession led by asylum seekers as well as free food, a community picnic, music and speeches.
The ‘Dignity Not Destitution’ event is being supported by a number of local organisations including Regional Asylum Activism, Boaz Trust, ASHA, GMIAU, Revive and Manchester City of Sanctuary. A flyer for the event can be found here.
Destitution can have a devastating effect on asylum seekers who have been refused protection, forcing thousands to suffer the indignity of homelessness. Destitute asylum seekers have no right to work and no right to claim meagre benefits to survive. This is an injustice that must end.
