Rio’s Selaron Steps

Rio, like any major city, offers some of the world’s best art that isn’t always in the museums or concert halls, but in the streets with its people.

Probably my favorite thing to see in Rio was the Selaron Steps, the intricate mosiac stairs that were a labor of love for artist Jorge Selarón. As a way to bring beauty to the dilapidated staircase, Jorge began assembling blue, green, and yellow tiles (Brazil’s colors), but as word spread, people from all around the world began to bring Jorge tiles to add to his masterpiece.

I could spend hours going through all the tiles and trying to imagine the looks passerbyers gave him in the initial stages of his project. But now, there is no denying that it’s a true piece of art which includes over 20,000 tiles and pieces representing 60 different countries.

Wouldn’t it be beautiful if schools did such…
