Oscar Niemeyer was one of the most influential architects of the mid-century modern style, one of my favourites. Last weekend he would have celebrated his 106th (!) birthday. He designed about 600 projects.
Before studying architecture at the artschool, he worked with his father, who was a typographer. One of his trademarks is the use of concrete and curves. He received a lot of awards and prizes. But the Pritzker Architecture Prize , which he won in 1988, was probably one of the most important prizes he won during his career.
Jonathan Glancey interviewed Niemeyer on his 100th birthday back in 2007. Read this interesting interview here.

“The architect’s role is to fight for a better world, where he can produce an architecture that serves everyone and not just a group of privileged people.” Oscar Niemeyer (1907-2012)
