On 8 May President Dilma Rousseff held a brief meeting with representatives from the Movimento dos Trabalhadores Sem-Teto (MTST) on a visit to the Itaquerão stadium in São Paulo. The Itaquerão is due to host the opening match of the World Cup, on June 12th, between Brazil and Croatia.
Earlier in the day, activists from the MTST and other campaign groups, had invaded the São Paulo offices of the construction companies, OAS, Odebrecht and Andrade Gutierrez, all of whom have been heavily involved in building projects related to the World Cup. Activists of landless and homeless movements claim the construction companies should be concentrating their efforts on the construction of houses, not stadiums. Two and a half thousand families are occupying an area close to the Itaquerão, and the MTST has said it will resist any attempts to move them.
