Yes, apparently this form of pimp-my-latte is a thing.
George Town has a growing café culture and you’ll see loads of quirky little places dotted around, which to be honest wouldn’t look out of place in some of those gentrified areas of London (minus the kimchi-eating frequenters). I stayed a few days at the rustic Coffee Atelier on Lorong Stewart – some converted Chinese shophouses dating back to 1927. Part of it even used to be a coffee roaster’s workshop.
Breakfast was served at Atelier’s Café 55, the only joint in Penang to do 3D coffee art. The baristas seemed to have a set list of characters they could create (learned from watching videos online they told me), but we asked for a Totoro one morning and they delivered!
