The gallery is the womb from which Vasconcelos’ work develops; feeding off the existing work on display. She has created artwork to fit around Manchester Art Gallery’s collection by reflecting certain subject matter and arranging her work in a way as to frame and mingle with the shape, meaning and material that was already in place. While complimenting the gallery’s collection she is also jarring against it; a female artist using traditionally female materials, soft delicate fabrics around, within and next to weighty sculptures and historical paintings. Her art seduces the viewer to reconsider the whole gallery. The building and its contents have been swept through by colour and play to become newly awakened.
By entering the dedicated exhibition area of her work, one is stepping back in time to see Vasconcelos’ pre-existing art rather than the culmination of what she has been exploring. The notion of a time machine…
