Las Fallas is a festival that takes place in the early spring. The festival coincides with St. Joseph’s Day, or Father’s Day in Europe. Originally, Las Fallas was a type of “spring cleaning” where citizens of Valencia would take old clothes, furniture and other things they no longer needed to be burned on the beach. Las Fallas has evolved into a festival filled with people in the streets, food, drinks, and loud fireworks. The Fallas, as the structures built for the festival are called, are constructed during the year out of wood, paper, wax and styrofoam. On the final night of the festival the Fallas are set ablaze in an act called the”Cremá”. As the Fallas burn, the people who took part in their creation cry in joy and sorrow as their difficult and beautiful artwork goes up in flames.
