Foz in the rain reminds me a lot of home. Apart from, of course, the signs on the buildings being in Portuguese. Maybe it’s the rain that reminds me of England, even though as I write I am being sent reports of barbeques in 30 degree heat from friends. Or perhaps it’s that this part of town has become so industrialised that you cannot tell the 7000 mile difference – there’s even a VW dealership on the same block as my hostel.

Foz’s main attraction is the enormous Iguazu Falls, stretching across the borders of Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay. We visited the Argentinian side in the Iguazu National Park and it was simply astounding. The sheer power and noise of the falls as the water cascades into the river below is enough to make any jaw…
