Researchers from HRL Labs, have created a new material which can be used to print ceramics.
3D printers have been able to build just about anything as long as there is enough polymer plastics to go around; some have even made do with metal and a rare few have even work with glass.
Thanks to a significant breakthrough by researchers at HRL Laboratories, 3D printers can now print ceramics.
The HRL Researchers figured that heating ceramic powder creates way too many microscopic flaws that could lead to tiny cracks which could ultimately result in fractures.
In order to get over this heating issue, the HRL team developed a material they refer to as “preceramic polymers” which when heated converts to ceramic.
In a nutshell, you use the preceramic polymers to print out the 3D design after which, just like you would with ceramic, you fire the print which…
