If one can be sure about anything, it’s that the Spaniards and the Catalonians very much inclusive love a fiesta, and whether it’s carnivals, football matches or flamenco shows, there’s always something going on in Barcelona. In fact, I’d say it is almost impossible to feel bored in this city, especially during ‘el Carnaval’. For over a century, Sitges, a charming coastal town located about 35 kilometres south of Barcelona, has celebrated Carnaval between the months of February and March. Since becoming a countercultural haven of tolerance during the otherwise grim Franco era, Sitges is now known around the world for its long-standing gay appeal and community. The Sitges carnival is a series of events that together attract around 300,000 people and has become a highpoint on the international gay calendar and adds a unique flavour and sense of fun to the festivities.
