As part of the council’s attempts to “future proof” the city, residents of Manchester have been experiencing ridiculous levels of traffic and congestion. With the average travel time around the city comfortably doubling over the last year, Manchester has now been named the third most congested city in the UK and the eighth most congested in the whole of Europe.
The figures, taken from sat nav company TomTom’s latest traffic analysis, show what most Manchester residents probably already knew, easy travel around the city is becoming near impossible.
The works, which are set to continue into 2017, are hoped to improve travel in and around Manchester with improvements being made to roads, cycle paths, footpaths and tramlines. With Manchester emerging as the fastest growing economy in the UK outside London, council members are hoping this will be another vital step in securing and improving the city’s future.
