A Baiana (or Baiana de Acarajé) is a woman of African descent from Salvador da Bahia (Brazil). They stand out for their beautiful traditional clothes consisting of various layers: petticoat, billowing skirt, long cotton pants, a bodice of lace or with embroidery, shawls, a headdress and lots of jewelry. In the streets of Bahia, some Baianas sell delicious acarajé (a fritter of black-eyed peas fried in palm oil) which is also offered to the saints and gods during Candomblé ceremonies. Baianas de Acarajé are recognized as a National Immaterial Heritage of Brazil.
