In countries throughout the world, the start of Lent is celebrated in unique and interesting ways. The UK has Pancake Day, the US has Marti Gras and Belgium has Carnival. Binche, in the south of Belgium has a centuries old, UNESCO protected carnival with beautiful masks and costumes, where over 1000 ‘Gilles’ (participants) march through the streets with elegance and poise.
