For a short video of the performance …

Part of an island called ‘Island to Island’ which displayed photographs of English-speaking Caribbean island taken by father and son (many years apart), this event took elements of Carnival back to their West African roots.

It us fantastic see the performances if different pieces by local organisation Miishe Arts. What was even more interesting was the discussion afterwards. Two ideas really stuck out:

  1. That borders in West Africa are imposed and that as you move between countries, there will be much cultural commonality, as well as differences.
  2. That the evolution of carnival must forget the (military) style if parade under colonial rule – it’s part of the evolution of the art form too!

Really looking forward to more programming like this!
