In less than a week, Manchester plans to unveil its latest statue: a sculpture of Mahatma Gandhi, to commemorate the 150th anniversary of his birth. (Scotland also obtained it’s first statue of the man when one was unveiled in Ayr earlier this year).
However, this decision has not been without controversy. A group of students from the University of Manchester have protested the statue, citing some of Gandhi’s earlier writings, which expressed racist attitudes about Black South Africans. Even one of the most famous non-violent leaders and political leaders is not without contentions.
I will talk in more detail about the statue once it has been unveiled, and I’ve had the opportunity to visit it. But, in the meantime, Manchester still has plenty of other statues overdue some attention from the Statues, Statues series…
