I had always assumed that the Sapoti (apparently called “sapodilla” in English, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen it in any English speaking country, except maybe Singapore and Malaysia, where I believe it is called sapote or chiku/chikoo) originated in Asia, since it is so common in Indonesia and Malaysia. At least according to Brazilian Fruits & Cultivated Exotics — the Bible of Brazilian fruit — however, it is actually from the Americas. If you bite into it before it is totally ripe, you will be rewarded with a twisted puckered mouth, full of tannin and latex — absolutely disgusting. If you wait until it is totally ripe, you might not like it much better — my wife and kids detest it — but I think it has a lot of merit, in part because it is so unique.
