Some years back I rode regularly with a local bicycle club comprised mostly racers of the middling level. As with bike racers of any era, doping and cheating were not infrequent topics of conversation. We argued about whether this rider or that one, or both, were “juicing”. New techniques of doping, and of hiding it, were always coming around, it seemed. Eventually we were confronted with the prospect of “mechanical doping”, the most talked-about version of which involves a small motor hidden with the bike’s frame. A friend asked me if I thought we’d ever see such cheating in a major race. I replied that I thought it was just a matter of time.
