In this video, I’ll answer the question, “who was Uncle Sam?” The United States of America goes by several monikers: America, the U.S. of A., the Land of Opportunity, and ‘Murica, just to name a few of them. However, the most popular and the most commonly used one would undoubtedly be “Uncle Sam.” This is the country personified – a white-haired, stern-looking man with stars on his tophat, pointing at viewers and demanding they listen.
Uncle Sam was a staple in recruitment posters during the two World Wars, encouraging young men to sign up for the armed forces and lay their lives down for their country. While advertisements today no longer use him, it can’t be denied that his image still evokes a sense of patriotism and nationalism in millions of Americans across the country.
