Asparagus (1979) – Animation As A Daydream:
This week’s video essay concludes our month on arthouse animation with the underrated Suzan Pitt’s magnificent classic short Asparagus. Often screened with David Lynch’s Eraserhead on the midnight-movie circuit, Asparagus has gained its own admiration for Pitt’s appreciation of colour, and her admiration for sexuality, identity, maternity, and the audience. A beautiful, mesmerising spectacle that often feels like a daydream, Asparagus is unlike anything you’ve seen before.
