They are perhaps the most mysterious of all hominids – the Denisovans. Stumbled upon just over a decade ago, this group has given up its DNA but not all of its bones.
LAURA SHACKELFORD is an Associate Professor in the Department of Anthropology and the Anatomy Director for the Carle Illinois College of Medicine. Her research focuses on the evolution of our species, Homo sapiens, as a background to understanding recent human diversity. Laura has a geographic focus in Southeast Asia, and since 2008 has co-directed ongoing field research in northern Laos. This culminated in the discovery of a tooth belonging to a young Denisovan girl.
