Yes, that too! People used a similar technique for blockhouses, but not that elegant by far.

I know for sure of the vikings, but also before. They fitted the logs into each other by carving out holes, so that they would rest inside each other not on top of each other. I think the settlers in the so called New World did as well at the beginning.
