  1. In Germany it is called “Truthahn” (the male), something like “hooting cock”, which makes a bit of sense; the female is called “Pute” (???)

    In Denmark they call the bird “kalkun” (???)

    And I always thought that the French call it dinde/dindon, because Columbus thought the American continent, where they found it, was India.
