It looks almost burnt, tastes sweet and only requires 3 ingredients: Pumpernickel. The dark rye bread is probably Germany’s most unusual bread. And that’s quite something in a country where there are more than 3,000 types of bread and people eat 56 kilos of bread every year. We have tried to get rye bread in Denmark without any wheat in it, no chance. There is only one kind of Knäckebrot (crisp bread) that is only made of Rye. It really is so much healthier.

My coeliac friends have the same complaint – wheat as a most unexpected ingredient – and have to carefully inspect ALL food labels!
