What’s a Paternoster Lift?

A paternoster lift is a passenger elevator which consists of a chain of open compartments (each usually designed for two people) that move slowly in a loop up and down inside a building without stopping. Passengers can step on or off at any floor they like.

  1. In my home town we had them in many official buildings and also in shopping centres when I was a child. In some of them, it was even possible to go all the way around. I never did that though, I was too scared of them. I always thought they were going too fast …
I think that there is one left in one of the old buildings, kept for nostalgia’s sake.
