A teenager who rescued a bumblebee says it is now her loyal pet – sleeping by her bed and even following her to the shops and bowling alley.
Lacey Shillinglaw, 13, spotted the large fluffy bumblebee lying in the road while walking her dog two weeks ago.
She scooped up the bee, now named Betty, noticing it had a crumpled wing, and tried to put it in a safer spot, on some flowers in a nearby park.
But it refused to stay put, buzzing back over to Lacey and crawling all over her, and after an hour she gave up and headed home with the creature perched on her shoulder.
And despite repeated attempts to leave her outside, the buzzy friend has refused to leave Lacey’s side ever since.[…]

It is an amazing story. I just read a similar one, but that bumblebee didn’t have wings, was born like that, so it was dependant on the human. “Betty” isn’t really, so it is all the more astonishing. And bumblebees hardly ever sting. I have loads of them in my garden, I have never been stung. Even wasps will in most cases only sting when being touched, they don’t fly after people to sting them., unless, of course, you kick their hive …

I must be unlucky. I was chatting to a friend with my hand on the door frame, as a teenager, when I was suddenly stung by a wasp, and instinctively squashed it with my thumb as a result!

I was stung twice by a wasp, but both times because of unknowingly touching them.

I could have touched it unknowingly but I just think it stung me peremptorily because of the proximity of my hand, and paid with its life!

I kneeled on one that was in the grass … understandingly it stung me to get rid of me. I was harvesting gooseberries, and there were loads of wasps around, but only that one stung me.
The second time I could feel something crawling on my leg (I was lying on my belly) and thought “what’s that” grabbing the intruder with my hand without looking, and sting ……

I agree that it’s mostly about their own survival (the scouts attracted to my Kitchën during cooking, will escape via the same window they came in if I wave my hand close In the general direction of outside for instance), but having been stung makes for vigilance… well most of the time!
