Astronomy | Construction of the next phase of the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) starts today


The next phase of the construction of the Square Kilometre Array – the SKA – starts today. Science and Technology minister Blade Nzimande is expected to do the sod-turning of the SKA’s next 133 telescopes that will be erected over the next few years. A similar ceremony will be held in Australia at the same time. Here in South Africa, the 67 telescopes that make up the MeerKAT, the frontrunner to the SKA, has already delivered beyond scientists’ wildest dreams.
