The Wonderful World of Northern Water Towers!


Water towers have a basic function and don’t need to be very exciting. But they are! Not only are they an important part of the water infrastructure, but they’re also local landmarks, famous for miles around. Part of the reason is that they just look great! They have no set design, so engineers over the years have gone to town – from ornate late-Victorian towers to utilitarian 20th century ones. Some even look like castles!

After slowly getting obsessed with them over a period of about a year, I decided to hit the road and try and film the very best I could find, including Norton, Everton and Scarth Hill.
