Interview with Yuko Asada | Women in Pan, Episode 8


In Episode 8 of the “Women in Pan” 10-part series, under the A Better Tomorrow banner, Attillah Springer interviews Yuko Asada about her life and journey in pan. Yuko is a musical instrument technician at Northern Illinois University (NIU) where she directs the NIU Community School of the Arts Steelband and assists the NIU Steelband. Yuko is a steelpan builder, tuner, educator, mentor, composer, arranger, transcriber and member of the new NIU Staff Professional Development Academy. She has presented at conferences, conducted workshops, co-founded the Pastiche Steel Ensemble, Virtual Steelband, and Pan in Unity. She has worked as clinician/adjudicator for steelpan festivals in the United States, Japan and Trinidad. Her work has also taken her to Australia and Thailand. She is the only active tuner trained under the late Dr. Clifford Alexis.
