One of the most ambitious infrastructure projects in the North Atlantic, Eysturoyartunnilin, or the Eysturoy Tunnel is a groundbreaking tunnel in the Faroe Islands that doesn’t just connect islands; it connects people, cultures, and communities, creating a lifeline under the ocean.
So, why all this effort for a country with a population of under 55,000? Simply put: connectivity. For years, life here revolved around ferry schedules and unpredictable storms. But these tunnels are transforming life on the Faroes, making it easier for people to stay connected year-round.
Built to bridge the islands of Streymoy and Eysturoy, the Eysturoy tunnel opened in December 2020. This undersea marvel stretches over 11 kilometers, with two lanes and a unique claim to fame, home to the world’s first undersea roundabout. Yes, you heard that right, a roundabout underwater!
Watch on to discover the amazing features of the most remote megaproject in the world!
