Can you make a coherent, practical chord progression from a set of clusters? What about microtonal cluster chords? Do they have an “ideal expression”, and how can one smoothly voice lead between the most densely dissonant chords in the game in a way that feels natural and musical? Today we are exploring this idea through a deep dive into the Mothra cluster. We’ll take a look at how famous composers of the past used cluster chords, how new techniques like panleading can help us change how we hear harmony itself, and craft the most insane microtonal progression that music theory has to offer which goes from mothra, to dorias, rast, mohajira and otonal all in the span of a single jam.
