India is entering one of the most energy-intensive periods of economic development in its history — but unlike China, Britain or America before it, much of its new electricity could come from the sun rather than fossil fuels. Solar capacity is soaring, batteries are getting cheaper and renewables are supplying an increasing share of new demand. But with coal still dominant and serious grid and transmission bottlenecks emerging, can India really build an energy system unlike anything the world has seen before?
