Consider the humble potato. Many of us take the starchy tuber for granted. But not Julio Hancco Mamani. That’s because deep in the Andes mountains, in the Cusco region of Peru, this “Potato King” is continuing a family legacy by cultivating more than 400 native varieties of the crop. But he’s not just growing them for fun. Mamani’s goal is to preserve the great variety that he has established for future generations and encourage others to love the noble tubers as much as he does. We actually watched a documentary about potatoes in the Andes on TV some time ago. They have to have hardy potatoes being so high up. It is very interesting.

I always wonder what set them on the road to domesticating the nightshade family in the first place?

That is a good question. But there are so many foods that have to be treated in complicated ways before they are digestible or not poisonous. Cassava for example. How did they find out that a special treatment would make it edible?
