There’s a common expression, “it’s easier to imagine the end of the world than the end of capitalism.” When the current economic model is seen more as an immutable force of nature than a system created by humans in the recent past, it becomes much harder to imagine actually changing it into something better. Let’s explore the idea of capitalist realism.

About Second Thought:
Second Thought is a channel devoted to education and analysis of current events from a Leftist perspective. Welcome!
Yes, we need to imagine life after capitalism, but my thoughts (one perspective among many, I know) are that the next era will have to grow out of the liberal democracies associated with capitalism. The present alternatives on the world stage don’t seem promising to me. But if the evolutionary trends pushing through those liberal democracies can throw off the capitalist husk, some new model of human relations and fulfillment might come out of it. “Who knows,” says Kerouac in “The Dharma Bums” — “the world might wake up and burst into a beautiful flower.”
