What happened to Indigenous Europeans?

There’s a chapter of European history that’s no longer told in books. Research suggests that thousands of years ago — long before recorded history — the indigenous peoples of Europe built unique, rich cultures.
But then, something changed — dramatically. Out of that shift emerged the Europe we know today: empires, kings, and conquest — a legacy of colonialism that shaped the world. So what happened? And have traces of that earlier world survived?
