The Fascinating Map of Fungi

In this map of fungi we learn everything we can about fungi in about 20 minutes. They are hugely underappreciated as they are an entire kingdom of life, as rich as plants and animals, and we use them so much in our day to day lives beyond eating their mushrooms. They are really important for medicine (antibiotics, statins and many more) and nearly all plants on Earth rely on fungi to live. Amazing stuff. I learned so much making this video!

How Herbie Hancock Wrote Maiden Voyage

Institute Chairman and jazz legend Herbie Hancock shares the unique story of how he composed the jazz standard “Maiden Voyage.”

Filmed at the University of Melbourne’s Federation Hall as part of International Jazz Day 2019 Education & Outreach Programs in Melbourne, Australia.

Featuring the Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz Performance at UCLA Class of 2020:

Aidan Lombard – trumpet
Lenard Simpson – alto saxophone
Chris Lewis – tenor saxophone
Roni Eytan – harmonica
Paul Cornish – piano
Emma Dayhuff – bass
Malachi Whitson – drums

The Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz Performance is a tuition-free two-year program that accepts one ensemble of musicians for each class. All of the students receive full scholarships, as well as stipends to cover their monthly living expenses. The students study both individually and as a small group, receiving personal mentoring, ensemble coaching, and lectures on the jazz tradition. They are also encouraged to experiment in expanding jazz in new directions through their compositions and performances. The program is currently in residence at the prestigious UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music.

The Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz Performance at UCLA is made possible in part thanks to the generous support of The Herb Alpert Foundation.
