Claudia de Rham: The search for quantum gravity

Claudia de Rham has spent much of her life dedicated to exploring the limits and true nature of gravity. As she describes in her new book, The Beauty of Falling, de Rham trained to be a pilot and then an astronaut.

To demonstrate gravity’s effects, New Scientist took her indoor skydiving at iFLY London, explaining how gravity acts on every cell of your body in the same way. Yet, gravity still isn’t fully understood. It doesn’t fit into the mould of the other fundamental forces, and quantum theory can’t yet explain it. For her part, de Rham has sought to make progress by thinking deeply about gravitons, the hypothetical carrier of the force of gravity. Each of the fundamental forces is carried by an equivalent “boson” particle – some have zero mass, others have a very small mass. De Rham wanted to know: what is the graviton’s mass?

What Are The 7 MEGAREGIONS Of Europe?

Which other country or continent’s Megalopolises should I make a video on next?

▶ In this video, I list and attempt to explain Europe’s Megalopolises. Exploring the concept of interconnected metropolitan areas known as megaregions. With a total of seven identified megaregions, including the renowned Blue Banana and Golden Banana, these areas are home to a significant portion of Europe’s population and economic activity. From that densely populated Blue Banana stretching across Western Europe to the Mediterranean Sun Belt (or Golden Banana), the Green ‘Central Europe’ Banana which connects the Baltic to the Adriatic Sea, the questionable “Orange Banana” of the Black Sea, the Nordic String which connects Northern Germany, Denmkar, and Southern Sweden & Norway, the Atlantic Axis of Portugal and Galicia, to the smaller yet impactful Gulf of Finland, each megaregion boasts its own unique characteristics and contributing factors to its population density.

BBC Radio 4 – New Storytellers, The Sound Collector

The Gold Winner of the Charles Parker Prize for the Best Student Audio Feature 2023.

Sara Parker introduces the Gold Winner of the Charles Parker Prize for the Best Student Audio Feature 2023.

Rummaging around in a lifetime’s possessions, two sisters discover an exercise book. As they open it up and sift through the pages, a poem unearths buried memories.

Producer Talia Augustidis, a recent graduate of University College London, discovers the moving writings of her older sister Thea, along with a poem, The Sound Collector. It brings them back to a moment in their childhood, when familiar sounds and voices suddenly disappeared overnight.

New Storytellers presents the work of new radio and audio producers, and Talia’s feature won the top Gold Award of the Charles Parker Prize for the Best Student Radio Feature in 2022. The award is presented every year in memory of the pioneering radio producer Charles Parker who produced the ground-breaking Radio Ballads featuring voices of communities unheard at the time, with musical narratives by Ewan MacColl and Peggy Seeger.

The judges of the prize, made up of producers, critics and commissioners, praised Talia’s Gold Prize winning work as “such a layered piece; intelligent, probing, sensitive. A piece to make us think and feel.”

Thibaut Derien Immortalizes the Aging Facades of France’s Shuttered Shops in Poignant Photographs | Colossal

Shuttered blinds and peeling paint don’t usually indicate an invitation, but for photographer Thibaut Derien, long-closed shops are well worth a stop.

Shuttered blinds, peeling paint, and aging doors don’t usually indicate an invitation, but for French photographer Thibaut Derien, the fading facades of long-closed shops are well worth a stop. In his ongoing series J’habite une ville fantôm, which translates to “I live in a ghost city,” he captures myriad eras and architectural details in storefronts ranging from cafes to photo studios to fishmongers, drawn to what he describes as a desire to “immortalize” them before they disappear for good.

Derien, who is also a musician, has traveled all over France, visiting countless small towns and villages along the way. He often avoids major highways, preferring country roads and local streets where development is slower. “I continue this series because I’m still touched each time I discover an old shop,” he tells Colossal, “always standing despite abandonment as a resistance to the modern world. I always think about people who spent their life behind those walls.”

A closed shop represents more than simply a bygone era or an empty facade for the artist, who is interested in capturing the individuality of each location in light of the homogeneity of today’s commercial developments. Derien looks closer: “First, it’s just a facade; you can think it’s sad, but if you look a little bit more you see old paintings, old mosaics, some ‘know-how’… Many commercial centers—all the same—have replaced the small shops, each one different.”
