A marine biologist explores the world’s strangest seals and their incredible adaptations. These pinnipeds conquer the planet’s harshest environments and evade deadly predators like great white sharks and orcas.

The terrifying leopard seal is the only seal that hunts warm-blooded animals like penguins and other seals. Its massive jaws open over 160 degrees, making it a top ocean predator. The bizarre truth about the crabeater seal doesn’t eat crabs! It uses specialized, sieve-like teeth to filter-feed on krill like a baleen whale. Hooded seals have an inflatable red nose that males use for dominance and communication. Southern elephant seal are the world’s largest carnivore, with males reaching up to and enormous 20 feet long and 8,800 pounds!

Seals have special adaptations that allow them to dive into the deepest parts of the ocean. Northern elephant seals plunge to over 5,000 feet (1,500 meters), while southern elephant seals can reach nearly 7,000 feet (2,130 meters), rivaling even the deepest diving whales! These deep dives serve as a refuge from sharks and orcas, allowing seals to actually sleep while diving. These seals can hold their breath for up to two hours! Leopard seals have a unique, dual feeding strategy. While their powerful long canines and sharp incisors make leopard seals a formidable hunter of large prey, its lobed molars allow younger seals to filter feed on krill, which forms the bulk of their juvenile diet. A fascinating look at marine biology and animal behavior in the wild!
