Amanita muscaria, toxic or edible? (Starts at 0:01)
For in depth information about the Amanita muscaria, this is a fantastic article. NOTE: This article states that no deaths have been attributed to A. muscaria, however since its publication a recently released study, “2006-2017 Summary of Mushroom Poisoning Reports in the NAMA Registry” by Michael W Beug, Chair NAMA Toxicology Committee, states a single death attributed to A muscaria (however indications there were likely other factors involved as well).

Are too many people getting into foraging mushrooms and is it a concern that we are teaching more people to go out and pick mushrooms? (Starts at 6:30)

How can I get involved more with the science and research, do I have to get a degree to do so, how do I find a mentor to help? (Starts at 10:30)
If you aren’t part of a Mycological Society or Mushroom club, head to the North American Mycological Association’s Website and check out their index of clubs all around North America: Namyco.org
Note: Not all clubs are NAMA affiliates, there could be clubs local to you that are not on this list.

Great places to get started in some Citizen Science action (and yes, a full video on this topic has officially been filmed and is in the works!).

Are the spores of toxic mushrooms toxic for me to breathe? Will I get sick if I have a lot of mushrooms around me and I’m breathing in lots of spores? (Starts at 13:40)

Cryptoccocus gattii articles: (Note, it is the natural wafting of the fungal spores in the air that have affected people, it is not associated with a specific handling of mushrooms, which makes the disease impossible to avoid for both city dwellers or forest folk.)

This is the Fly Agaric (Amanita muscaria) – aka the mushroom from Super Mario Brothers. It’s famous, yet I think the general consensus is that you should never ever eat it. That’s probably the safest thing to do, but did you know that it was used for thousands of years by our ancestors?

BBC Radio 4 – Free Thinking, Positive and negative politics, ‘intellectual vices’ and the face you bring to work

Sir Richard Evans, Margaret Heffernan, Isabel Oakeshott, Quassim Cassam join Anne McElvoy to look at the ideas shaping our lives today. Are they optimists or pessimists ? How negative should we be in political campaigning, doomscrolling, parenting, writing reviews or giving academic feedback. What are intellectual vices and how might they help us think about truth and conspiracy theories? And “Have a nice day” – we look at the demand to perform a role in the workplace.

Professor Sir Richard J Evans is an historian of modern Germany and modern Europe, and has published over 20 books in the field, most recently The Pursuit of Power: Europe 1815-1915 and Eric Hobsbawm: A Life in History. In August his new book comes out called Hitler’s People: The Faces of the Third Reich
Margaret Heffernan is an entrepreneur, CEO and author of books including Uncharted: How to Map the Future Together and Beyond Measure: The Impact of Small Changes
Quassim Cassam is Professor of Philosophy at the University of Warwick. His books include Ekstremisme, The Epistemology of Democracy and
Vice Epistemology.
Isabel Oakeshott is an award winning British political journalist. Her books include The Pandemic Diaries written with Matt Hancock, Life Support: Farmaggedon written with Michael Ashcroft.
Dr Jaswinder Blackwell-Pal is a Lecturer in Theatre and Performance Studies at Queen Mary University of London. She’s been announced this week as one of 10 early career academics who’ve been chosen as the 2024 New Generation Thinkers – that’s a scheme to share academic research on the radio which the BBC runs with the Arts and Humanities Research Council. You can hear from all ten in a special New Thinking episode of our Arts & Ideas podcast where you will also find episodes of Free Thinking.
